OMBUDSMAN PAYS COURTESY CALL ON THE GENERAL MANAGER AND TEAM OF THE NATIONAL TOURIST BOARD

In continuation of his courtesy visits and sensitization drive, the Ombudsman Tejan Ahmed Israel Jah Esq, paid a courtesy visit to the General Manager of the National Tourist Board at her Office at Lumley Beach Road.

Addressing the General Manager and Team, the Ombudsman informed them that his mandate stems from the 1991 Constitution and the enabling Ombudsman Act of 1997. He further stated that the office investigates administrative decisions that cause hardship or detriment to members of the Public as well as Public Sector workers. He noted that the Institution employs Alternative Dispute Mechanisms to resolve disputes. He said that when decisions are taken against staff members, it should follow the laid down rules and regulations or operating manuals of the Institution.

In response, the General Manager National Tourist Board Fatmata Carew, thanked the Ombudsman and Team and notes that the NTB stands ready to support the Ombudsman's office in the fight against injustice and maladministration. She stated that they are currently implementing a Cabinet decision to give a face-lift to the beach front. She noted that they are working closely with the beach owners to achieve this directive. She pledged her Institution's continued support to the work of the Ombudsman.

OMBUDSMAN PAYS COURTESY CALL ON THE PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE OF THE SIERRA LEONE SCOUTS ASSOCIATION

The Ombudsman Tejan Ahmed Israel Jah Esq has paid a courtesy visit to the National President and other executives of the Sierra Leone Scout Association at their Office at New England in Freetown.

Addressing the President and his Executive, the Ombudsman stated that his Office is created by the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No. 6 of 1991 and the enabling Ombudsman Act of 1997. He stated that his office uses Alternative Dispute Resolution methods to redress grievances. He notes that the Ombudsman's Office is charged with the responsibility of investigating administrative acts/ omissions of a prescribed Authority (MDAs) in the discharge of their duties.

He further stated that the Sierra Leone Scout Association being an agency of government supervised by the Ministry of Social Welfare falls under the mandate of the Ombudsman.

Responding, the President of the Sierra Leone Scout Association Sheik Fomba Swaray, thanked the Ombudsman and Team for the visit. He stated that the Scout Association is an association that instills discipline in their members. He further noted that the Ombudsman's Office has been pivotal in ensuring that the issues of injustices and maladministration within government institutions is brought to a minimal. He pledged his Institution's support to the Office of the Ombudsman.

THE MINISTER OF BASIC AND SENIOR SECONDARY EDUCATION AND MANAGEMENT TEAM

In a bid to build and strengthen the cordial working relationship with MDAs, the Ombudsman Tejan Ahmed Israel Jah Esq. paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Mr. Conrad Sackey and his Management Team at their Offices at New England Ville in Freetown.

Making a presentation on his mandate and function, the Ombudsman Tejan Ahmed Israel Jah Esq, stated that his Office is mandated to receive and investigate complaints from any member of the public who have suffered injustice as a result of maladministration. He further noted that when members of staff of his Institution go on investigations they are sometimes faced with reprisals from Heads of Institutions. He revealed that the issues of injustices and maladministration are endemic in the Civil/ Public Service. He maintained that his mandate aligns with one of His Excellency's Manifesto promises of revamping the Civil/Public Service which is also Pillar 5 of the Mid-Term National Development Plan.

Thanking the Ombudsman and Team, the Minister, Mr. Conrad Sackey noted that public trust has been eroded and that the Ombudsman has a huge task in ensuring that the Civil/ Public Service are cleared of these administrative anomalies that hamper service delivery.

He noted that 22% of the National Budget goes towards education with 85,000 teachers, 12,000 Schools with 3.5 million pupils.

He thanked the Ombudsman and Team and stressed the need for a whistle blower policy to protect whistle blowers. He further pledged his Ministry's continued support to the work of the Ombudsman.

OMBUDSMAN ENGAGES THE CHAIRMAN AND STAFF OF THE SIERRA LEONE HEALTH SERVICE COMMISSION

In continuation of his Sensitization about his mandate and partnership building drive, the Ombudsman Tejan Ahmed Israel Jah Esq has paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman and Staff of the Sierra Leone Health Service Commission at their Offices in Freetown.

Making his presentation, the Ombudsman explained his mandate as enshrined in the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No.6 of 1991 and also the Ombudsman Act of 1997. He outlined the definition of Injustice which includes hardship, detriment or grievance occasioned by any inequitable treatment whether legally imposed or otherwise.

The Ombudsman further described maladministration as bias, unfair discrimination, harshness or general high-handedness and also using powers for the wrong purpose. He encouraged members of staff to ensure that they explore their internal redress mechanisms before making a complaint to the office of the Ombudsman.

Thanking the Ombudsman and Team, the Chairman, Sierra Leone Health Service Commission Dr. Anthony Sandi, stated that the information shared by the Ombudsman is essential and that his Institution will abide by same but stressed that the Ombudsman's Office needs to do more in sensitizing the populace about its mandate and functions. He pledged his Commission's continued collaboration with the Office of the Ombudsman.
