OMBUDSMAN ENGAGES THE CHAIRMAN AND COMMISSIONERS OF THE RIGHT TO ACCESS INFORMATION COMMISSION (RAIC)
In continuation of his courtesy visit and sensitization campaigns, the Ombudsman paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman/Information Commissioner Dr. Ibrahim Seaga Shaw and his Management Team at their Offices at Krootown Road.
The Ombudsman explained his mandate and functions in relation to Administrative Justice in the Civil/ Public Service. He stated that he undertaking the sensitization campaigns to build cordial working relationships with the respective MDAs. He noted that he is also raising awareness on the work of the Ombudsman as many Civil/Public Servants do not know about the mandate and functions of his Office.
The Ombudsman further stated that many people are suffering in silence but they are afraid to complain for fear of reprisals from their superiors.
He further explained that his Office receives complaints not only from members of the Civil/Public Service but also members of the public who have suffered injustice as a result of the administrative actions/ omissions of government officials/ Institutions.
He stated that his mandate aligns with one of President Bio's manifesto promises of revamping the Public Service architecture which is Pillar 5 of the Mid-Term National Development Plan and Goal 16 of the SDG's.
Thanking the Ombudsman and Team for the visit, the Chairman/Information Commissioner Dr. Ibrahim Seaga Shaw stated that the mandate of the Commission is to facilitate access to information that the public requires and to ensure information needed by institutions and individuals are made available when requested. He noted that he would like both Institutions to look at areas of collaboration. He cited information sharing, public awareness raising and visibility, mutual support, investigations, capacity building and to undertake joint programs. He pledged his Institution's continued support to the Office of the Ombudsman.
