In a bid to strengthen his mandate in the fight against injustice occasioned by Maladministration, the Ombudsman, Tejan Ahmed Israel Jah Esq. has paid a familiarization visit to the United Nations Resident Coordinator Ms. Seraphim Wakana at her Office at Wilberforce.
The Ombudsman told the Resident Coordinator about the mandate and functions of his office in line with Constitution of Sierra Leone and the Ombudsman Act of 1997. He stated that the United Nations Development program (UNDP) supported the office some years ago and that it was in line with that that he decided to visit the UN Resident Coordinator to further strengthen the relationship.
Ms. Wakana, thanked the Ombudsman and Team for the visitation She noted that the role of the Ombudsman is important in the area of accountability and good governance. She stated that the United Nations seeks to strengthen capacity within the Public service and they are in the designing phase of the strategy for the entire nation.
The United Nations Senior Human Rights Adviser in the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator Dr. Uchenna Emelonye, said that the Ombudsman should also look into that area of consumer protection. He noted that the Ombudsman serves as an Alternative Dispute Mechanism. He stated that the Office of the Ombudsman should ensure that the general public is aware of what they are doing and how people can benefit from the services the Office offers.
